Exemption for Labor in Antitrust Measure
Washington May 26 Democratic opposition to labor demands for amendments to the omnibus antitrust bill nearly collapsed as the house moved toward final debate. Conferences at the White House and Capitol yielded an understanding that labor, fraternal and agricultural groups shall not be treated as illegal combinations under antitrust laws, with section 18 protections for peaceable strikes and boycotts retained. Labor leaders and AFL officials who filled the gallery saw the fight ease, while opposition faded. President Wilson and advisers discussed aligning the bill with the Baltimore platform, favoring no stricter prosecution of labor than other corporations. The bill’s fate appears to be decided Friday or early next week, with the railroad stocks and bonds control bill occupying the remainder of the period.
