Severe flood damage disrupts rail service from Charlotte to Atlanta with a 200 foot trestle washout near the Catawba river. Trains rerouted via Columbia and Spartanburg and progress expected by Saturday. Water works damaged in Asheville. widespread crop and land losses noted.
Flood damage disrupts the Knoxville division of the Southern railway with trains to Chattanooga delayed. General Superintendent J A Dodson has left for the site as the Knoxville train expected at noon had not arrived by midday. A new eastbound route via Asheville is expected to be established today.
The report notes rising water levels east of the shore with the danger line near the surface. Shorty-two feet depth measured at Knoxvills area, indicating potential hazard for vessels and nearby settlements.
The river will reach thirty seven feet and four feet above danger, submerging valley farming lands. Manufacturing plants in the area will be compelled to erase down as thousands of acres of corn and wheat are damaged.
Beached near Columbia several railroad bridges fail amid an unprecedented freshet. All-Atlanta and Charlotte lines, Seaboard routes, and a big Southern bridge over the Catawba between Charlotte and Spartansburg collapse. Trains rerouted via Alston and Clinton as another bridge over a wide creek near Alston goes down just after a passing train.
Washington May 23 Several interruptions to railroad traffic delay mails due to floods in the south. The worst points are the routes between Charlotte and Atlanta and Charlotte and Knoxville crossing the Catawba river and the lines Bristol to Chattanooga over the Watuga river. Washouts are not expected to be repaired before Saturday. mails diverted via alternative routes.
In Richmond Virginia the James River flood covers wharves shipyard and lower city streets as midnight approaches. Despite precautions the damage is growing though expected to be minor overall. The Chesapeake and Ohio railroad James River division is tied up and roadbed damage may be extensive while river crops suffer heavily from the rising water.
Grant reports widespread suffering in Elizabethton Tennessee with about 20 percent of town residents and 1,000 in the countryside homeless after Tuesday's disaster. Town residents provide tools and clothing as outside help begins arriving. Johnson City has contributed funds and aid to alleviate the hardship.
Severe washout south of Charlotte disrupted Southern Railway schedules between Atlanta and Washington. Trains rerouted via Columbia and Spartanburg causing multi hour delays. Train 36 and vestibule service delayed four hours, while Train 93 arrived late. Train 28 cancelled. passengers shifted to other services. Reports describe the route detours through Columbia and Charlottesville with substantial impact on arrivals and connections.
Floods across Tennessee claim fourteen lives with more expected as Elizabethton, Watauga and nearby areas report wrecked bridges, ruined crops, and steep damages estimated at hundreds of thousands. The Onega steamer wrecked near Chattanooga, and rail routes via Bristol face delays until bridges are rebuilt.

Mrs Pierson fled the scene and fear of arrest haunts the household, while a daughter recently died of pneumonia.
Richmond detectives Cheries H Jump and Chris Hagan, brought by the Lunasy Observation League to investigate saloon violations, faced near-violent conduct from angered barkeepers as court hearings on Sunday violations adjourned. The secret service men defended themselves. Justice Crutchfield postponed judgment until June. A dozen saloon men reported amid a large crowd and tense scenes at the courtroom.
Manila May 22 Gates of Bilibid Prison opened to admit three former United States officers who began serving sentences for misappropriation tied to commissary scandals. Capt. Frederick J. Barrows five years Capt. James G. Reed three years Lt. Frederick Boyer one year. Interpreting notes say Boyer protested innocence and Barrow accused by Boyer. Major Hale rearranged housing separating Filipino prisoners.
A Reuters dispatch from Pekin reports Washington will not concede to Mercantile tax terms in the Chinese tariff. The U S position favors higher Chinese duties only if Americans gain broader free trade with China. The May 23 briefing notes the Volted states aim to expand trade openings rather than tariff advantages.
Report from Pekin states the foreign ministers have declined the US suggestion to raise the indemnity from China to 200 million dollars. The government backs abolition of the Likin tax and other reforms. They favor more Chinese treaty ports and removal of trade restrictions at some ports. Mr Rockhill confirms the development.

In St Paul on May 2 E E Clark was re-elected grand chief of the Order of Railway Conductors. L H Shepard of Camden defeated A J Corbett of Nashville for grand junior conductor. Franke Smith of Detroit won inside sentinel post. Ulysses Grant Ferguson of Ogden became outside sentinel. James E Acher of Houston was reelected to the board of trustees. Durbin of Milwaukee Budd and Ingram were chosen on the insurance committee.
Congressman Charles B. Landis visiting West Point warned that Congress might close the military academy for three or four years if hazing cannot be suppressed. He said lawmakers could act to stamp out the hazing evil unless the cadets learn to reform immediately. Endianapolis, Ind. May.
Two gallant officers who died in the Chinese campaign were buried in Arlington cemetery. Captain Henry J. Reilly of the Virth artillery and Captain Austin H. Davis of the marine corps were interred after flying in from Pekin where they had military burials. Relatives arranged for their return and the females of these officers arrived in Washington yesterday.
Worcester, May 20 9 Mrs Elizabeth A Naramore killed her six children at Coldbrook Springs March w ith beatings by ox and club brain destruction. She was found not guilty by reason of insanity and committed to Worcester Insane Hospital for life. Amarillo Texas fire devastates Brown's grocery and adjacent buildings, including Oxford Hotel and Champion Printing office, spreading to Stringfellow & Hulme warehouse.
Cincinnati May 23 final action transferring the Cincinnati Portsmouth and Virginia railroad to the Norfolk and Western has been completed as blockholders rallied the sale. The line between Portsmouth and Cincinnati now becomes part of the Norfolk and Western system.
The Southern railway, Atlanta and West Point railroad and the Central of Georgia plan a modern union station in Atlanta to be built between Forsyth and Mitchell streets with other roads likely to join. Exact site not yet fixed but preparations are under way to abandon the present depot and construct a substantial facility at the earliest date. The plan calls for a handsome, thoroughly modern station capable of handling increased passenger traffic.
A committee from fourteen Southern railway machine shops led by Henry of Knoxville and others from Atlanta Macon Memphis and Selma met J A Dodson and set off for Washington to press for nine hours work ten hours pay and 92 percent employment. They warn of a strike if demands are not met and claim the conference with Vice President Gannon is a formality. William Hail acts as Southern organizer of the machinists union.
Marthirne Wessels Pretorius, first president of the Dutch African republic, died May 1 after two days of illness in Petebostrom, Transvaal Colony. The death marks the end of a key era in South African history as the nation mourns its early leadership.
