Prominent Atlanta Doctor Escapes Mercury Poisoning
Dr. Dumbar Roy at 822 Peachtree Street narrowly dodged a deadly bichloride of mercury dose after mistaking it for calomel. He swallowed one grain, using fast emetics and water, and suffered no lasting harm, unlike the Macon real estate man Walker, Jr., who died after a larger dose. Roy says Walker’s death stemmed from slow absorption and kidney failure, with Roy noting the toxic effects unfold gradually rather than instantly.
