Mrs Harvie Spence wife of a large Richmond trunk dealer was thrown from a dog cart after the horse bolted near the city limits. Accompanied by her father T O Woody she died within an hour. Her husband and a surgeon reached the scene as she expired.
In Columbia South Carolina on May 22 a black man Jim Robertson narrowly escaped lynching by about two hundred women angry at a preacher. Robertson allegedly abused Rev J Hart after a church funds dispute, chased him into a house, and was restrained when a bystander intervened. he remains jailed.
A Raleigh special reports the death of Romulus Odom a white man in Randolph County North Carolina. The body was found cold and rigid with signs of foul play and his wife and relatives are suspected in the case. The incident has stirred tension as investigators probe whether the neck was broken and what role the spouse and kin may have played.
James Brown and Miss Smoot were struck and killed by a freight train near Mutten's mills in Tazewell County while crossing a trestle. Brown died heroically while helping Smoot escape after she stumbled in haste to cross as the train swerved.
Waadville Tenn May 22 Special John G Plukerton shot by thief in Rutherford county after catching thief stealing his road cart. He fired as pursued thief fled. Injured in abdomen he died at home from internal hemorrhage leaving a wife and children.
Five boilers exploded at Beaver mill near Keene New Hampshire today destroying the building. Several men killed and many injured. Names listed include Herbert G Holton Lewis Star key Frank Droulstie Ireman George H Carpenter Gregory Carpenter Michael Roach George W Piper William Clark. Others were treated at local hospital or sent home. Chaos as debris covered the pile. further casualties feared. Berlin reports cite attempted suicide at New York execution. Widespread assaults and disturbances reported across several towns with multiple injuries and arrests in ongoing incidents.
Washington May 22 The Presbyterian general assembly opened with prayer and quick debate over the Briggs case. Dr Young and others urged sending Briggs overtures to the judiciary, while Chicago and Detroit delegates pressed for immediate action. Moderator Craig admonished speakers as factions clashed amid votes on church policy and Sabbath observance. The assembly will meet again in Nashville next year.

Nashville and Little Rock reports note extensive blazes and investigations. Beatty Glass Works fire displaces 600 workers.
