Americans in Battle With Mexican Patrol
San Diego May 19. The American fishing launch New Ancono arrived with bullet holes in her hull after an attack by the Mexican patrol launch Ensenada. Captain Esqulamus said the attack occurred yesterday eight miles offshore between Ensenada and San Diego while flying the American flag. His crew of three hid behind nets and fired eighteen shots as the Ensenada withdrew. Ensenada authorities and American owned island boats have been at odds for some time. Reports from Ensenada say a Mexican cantema officer aboard the patrol boat was shot five times by American fishermen and died shortly after the patrol boat reached the Mexican port.

Professional views on cotton market in New York and Liverpool
In New York on May 19 special notes compare the cotton market with Liverpool where English merchants hedge against US buying. Despite bearish weather prospects, US demand remains steady, aided by buyers absorbing offerings and lifting prices slowly. The overall mood reflects uncertainty over war news and German replies to the American note, with merchants awaiting political settlement before committing.
