Troops report in the north of Mukéen with plans to strike behind Europatkin’s line. Russians may retreat to Harbin as Japanese forces near Niuchwang. Russian guards poised to leave the port ahead of the Japanese approach, with reinforcements pending.
Forecast for Georgia, fair Thursday and Friday with fresh west winds. News briefs include two major industries planned in Atlanta, stoppages for world fair visitors, a diocesan convention raising funds, and a coroner’s verdict of murder in Jefferson. Also reports on postal trial, church elections, and regional market movements.
Engineers at Los Angeles convened in executive session but adjourned without public action on day proceedings. Grand chief engineer W S Stone seeks reelection, with J F Kila of Pittsburgh and M H Shay of Youngstown as other candidates. The group urged President Roosevelt to press a postal investigation decision to relieve Third Assistant Postmaster General Madden from a lingering suspension.
Montgomery May 18 Special The state convict board announces a reformatory for boys under sixteen to be set up on state property at Bpelgn er. It will open August 1 and is expected to primarily care for negro boys.
The Ohio based Stephens & Co and the Buckeye Cotton Oil Co a unit of Procter and Gamble announce new Atlanta plants. A $100000 cold storage facility will be built on Western and Atlantic tracks Means street. A Procter and Gamble cotton seed oil mill will be erected along the Southern railroad opposite Clark University with completion and operation planned after site selection.
Atlanta wins stopover rights for six months on through tickets to the St Louis exposition. Southeastern Association of Passenger Agents grants privilege to Atlanta due to lack of ticket scalping and revenue protection. Officials from major railroads, including A G and C and T P Ry, Georgia RR, and Seaboard, attended the session.
A ten day tour of southern battlefields will be undertaken by New York legislators under the state monuments commission. The party will depart by special train Friday night and visit Washington Richmond Chattanooga Lookout Mountain Vicksburg Andersonville and Macon with nearby battlefield sites. Included are Senators Baines Malby FB R Brown Stevens Goodsell W L Brown Grady and Whipple along with Speakers Nixon and Assembly members Rogers Burnett Phillips Palmer Haxter and Assembly Clerk. Governor Odell’s participation is currently doubtful.
Raleigh May 18 Special at the State Agricultural and Mechanical College a 400 acre farm hosts important tobacco disease experiments including wit and efforts to eradicate wild onion. Reports from eastern North Carolina indicate likely high cotton prices ahead as farm labor shortages loom. Contempt case against Judge Peebles dominates state talk with affidavits and possible impeachment moves. Green McAddo the Guilford County killer is jailed in Greensboro claiming self defense. The Dewey case remains a great mystery as to his whereabouts after stealing 126000 from Farmers and Merchants Bank Newbern now heard from in California.
An Imperial edict issued today opens the ports of Chinannu Fu Wei Shi On and Chou Tsun on the Bhan Tung peninsula to world commerce inviting foreign merchants to engage in trade and enterprise in the region from Pekin on May 18.
Philadelphia coroner’s inquest into 10 year old William Black's death reveals he smoked his first cigar on Sunday. An emetic was given at the hospital exposing a cigar stump. The boy briefly recovered consciousness before dying, stating he swallowed the cigar by accident while trying to smoke.
Savannah Ga May 18 Special Bishop Kelley of the Catholic diocese directs that under the pope's orders women be barred from church choirs effective January 1 1908. He urges a return to Gregorian chant and Latin text with unity of composition and reliance on the organ. A diocesan commission is recommended but appears unlikely at present.
Circuit Judge Ernest Gary denied a motion by Morgan Thrailkill’s attorney to exhume the body of B B Burton of Saluda, killed a month earlier, to search for a possible bullet. The judge ruled no law authorizes such proceedings, marking the first case of its kind in South Carolina.
In Hountaville Alabama on May 6 special report notes Bud Bull a white man convicted of murdering Frank Stewart and sentenced to twenty years in prison has appealed to the supreme court Bull is not believed to be fully responsible and recently he escaped from jail and returned to the city as if nothing had occurred
In Des Moines on May 18 a demented woman from St. Paul threw her 3-year-old daughter from the Walnut street bridge into the Des Moines river. A riverman rescued both before the child could drown, though she may die.
The Central Real Estate Company property on Madison Street between Hunter and Mitchell, fronting the planned union depot plaza, is to be sold at 1 o'clock Monday morning by Forrest & George Adair and E. P. Black & Son. The sale stems from a long foreshadowed belief by Atlanta leaders including Henry Grady and W. A. Hemphill that a larger depot would rise nearby.
William Liedermann a 19 year old New Yorker shot his mother in East Chester after she refused him money for whiskey. The mother said he claimed to go to Washington to kill President Roosevelt once he had funds. The motive cited was the denial of money to buy whisky.
Washington pa May 18 United States Senator M B Quay is reported in worse condition with every precaution taken to prevent relapse The report notes his health decline and ongoing efforts to monitor him. New Orleans May 16 Heirs of Amelia Noquez uncover 340000 in a safe as gold silver and cash found in her home on Tchoupitoulas street. Mr Noquez had lived simply and saved the money for years.
Words of the speaker carried weight as the Central Real Estate Company formed with W A Hemphill as president and Henry W Grady as vice president. After years of holding, offers to sell arose for part of the property near Madison Street to build a hotel or other ventures around a new depot. Company officers resolved to auction six lots on Madison Street and two adjacent lots near the old ice house and fire department HQ at the foot of Alabama Street, with Black and Adair handling the sale.
