Washington dispatch reports Postmaster General Bissell revoked Captain William Weaver’s appointment as postmaster at Cobb County amid a push by Colonel Livingston and supporters. Livingston’s backers claim the move corrects cabinet interference and reopen the field for all applicants, with candidates including Judge Lawson, Colonel Renfroe, and Robert Rodgers gaining attention as contenders.
Washington May 18 authentic statement on interview between Secretary Gresham and the Chinese minister at the State Department last Wednesday. Interview was calm with no sensational remarks. No indication of withdrawal of the legation due to enforcement of the law. Secretary Gresham has not heard any suggestion of such action. Chinese minister believed no trouble would arise from the law and that relations with the United States would remain friendly. The interview lasted about twenty minutes and was pleasant. The piece notes the Supreme Court decision in the exclusion cases and discusses forthcoming opinions and a separate concurrence. Secretary Curtis to decide whether a Chinese innkeeper is a laborer or a merchant. A Chinese man in the saloon business left New York six months ago for China and has since returned. Special from Charleston May 18 Clerk Haygood began taking testimony in the famous railroad tax cases involving the South Carolina and the Richmond and Danville roads. The disputes date to 1802 when the state board of equalizers valued the lines and the railroads resisted payment, seeking injunctions until a merits hearing. Proceedings will determine property value and tax implications as the court weighs the assessments. Also May 18 Special reports the death of Duncan, son of Joseph Davis, who narrowly escaped a fatal shooting accident when a neighbor’s gun misfired. he later died due to the mishap despite timely medical care.
In Raleigh on May 18 special reports warn of frost damage from yesterday and this morning, impacting cotton and other crops. The frost reduces prospects and leaves farmers discouraged as seasonal conditions worsen across the region.
Brunswick Ga May 18 Special President Max Ullman of the Oglethorpe National Bank shot himself in the bank toilet after a day of rumors and runs that closed the bank and others nearby. The First National Bank also suspended as panic spread, while merchants feared broader financial damage and neighbors sought clarity on the bank’s solvency.

Colonel David C. Houston, engineer and West Point graduate, died at St Vincent's hospital after a period of illness linked to heavy alcohol use. Rail lines and bridges were damaged with trains halted portions of lines under water but repairs began as relief crews worked through the week.
