Bitterness Shown In Riggs Bank Case

In Washington on May 16 the District of Columbia Supreme Court opened arguments on motions to dismiss a suit by Riggs National Bank against Treasury officials. The hearing featured sharp exchanges over publicity and government officials' immunity. Louis Brandeis and Samuel Untermyer argued for McAdoo and others, contending the case targets the United States as a party and may be barred without consent. Debates centered on the bank's right to suit, alleged improper government actions, and penalties cited for missing loan reports. The court paused to limit inflammatory displays, with two more days of argument anticipated. If motions fail, officials may be required to justify a permanent injunction.
