Memphis Tenn May 17 The Central Metal League of Tennessee issues a call for a national conference of friends of silver. The notice urges a convention to discuss restoring bimetallic standards and opposing the gold standard across the United States.
Washington May 17 The president approves retiring Admiral Meade on Monday ending his active career yet preserves accountability for actions while on duty or since detachment if investigations arise. A silver conference heated over a permanent name adopting The Bimetallic Union. Delegates include ex Governor Bradford Prince New Mexico and Governor Alva Williams of Denver with others from Montana Oregon California and Utah to attend the Memphis convention beginning June 6 and to promote free coinage at the 16 to 1 ratio.

Mike L. King was executed in Huntsville Tennessee for the December 23 murder of Aaron Beck a farmer. King shot Beck as he slept at Becks home then threw the body into an old well the motive cited as robbery.

A major blaze in Bermondsey last night destroyed two leather warehouses and many buildings covering two acres. The warehouses contained large quantities of sealskins and furs along with other goods. The estimated loss runs to $600,000.

They report securing 7.1 to 8 million dollars at 1 percent with renewal options, aiming to turn funds loose by October 1st to merchants and planters at 8 to 15 percent, claiming it will ease temporary pressure but may worsen farmers' situation after settlement.
