Washington reports stir as Panama canal commission buys supplies abroad claiming lower costs. Republicans accuse the move of Democratic tariff manipulation benefiting trusts and industry. Key figures warn of tariff repercussions while noting steel rail price discrepancies between domestic and foreign markets. The dispute sparks questions about American labor, wages, and protectionist policy.
At Edgefield Walter Hill, a colored man, shot at his wife with a wine pistol but missed. He then beat her to death with the weapon. A sister of the woman was badly injured during the struggle. Hill escaped authorities.
In Ufa on May 16 Major General Sokolovsky governor general of the province was fired on while at an entertainment in a public garden. He was wounded severely and his assassin fled. This marks a second similar crime in V years in the city with his predecessor having been assassinated in 1903. General Sokolovsky had a stern official reputation and was known for restoring order in Orenburg and the surrounding provinces.
Tariff League treasurer Wilbur F. Wakeman in Atlanta criticizes the canal purchase plan. He questions legality, arguing the Panama enterprise is American and materials should be bought in the United States. Wakeman cites Philippine railway provisions as precedent and urges court or commission review. Washington May 16. Taft postpones Philippines rail bid opening to November with a planned hearing on bidding changes.
Plans to enlarge Colon and Panama terminal and dock facilities and to double track and reequipment the road were approved by the board of the Panama Canal Company at a meeting here today. Estimated expenditure near $2,000,000.
A carriage accident two miles from Wilmington sends Mrs W R Kenan, Mrs Annie Kenan, and Miss Sarah Kenan to hospital after a frightened team dashed into a ditch. Miss Annie Kenan sustains a compound fracture of the right leg. Miss Sarah and Mrs Kenan suffer nervous shocks and minor bruises. Dr F H Russell and specialists are en route from New York. Colonel Thomas J Kenan and Jim Baltimore are among visitors debating treatment.
Foggy conditions hinder a detailed assessment as the Cunard liner Caronia ran aground near Sandy Hook. Crew reports the ship rests easily with the bow grounded on a shoal north of the Hook. A large steamship nearby observed the event as fog reduced visibility. In separate news, Judge John Foster won a congressional seat in Indiana’s first district, with returns showing a lead around 1,060 that may narrow to about 600 after full results.
The Manufacturers Association held two sessions at the Grand opera house yesterday with a program ranging from fire insurance reports to addresses by Howard AtBingon Samuelpenser g Naon and James A. Emery on organization and patents. Governor Terrell and Mayor Woodward welcomed attendees as the gathering of national business leaders, many millionaires, sought plans for future industry and legislation.

Washington May 26. Before the senate committee on Interstate commerce George R Robbins head of Armour Car Lines testified that the company held twenty or thirty exclusive contracts with railroads for fruit transportation and admitted a monopoly in parts of the west and south. He said producers and shippers on these lines had to accept the rates set by Armour, though the company claimed it served 80 percent of the shippers.
In New Orleans the executive committee of the regular Republicans met with Mr. Cohen presiding and decided to make more recommendations to President Roosevelt for the Port appraiser position. The national committeeman question was settled by Chairman Cox Teleou.
May 16 reports describe police invasion of a Chicago union headquarters used by Bricklayers and other labor groups after an unlawful assault on a nonunion driver. Eleven men were arrested as fears grow of further slayings and threats aimed at leadership including John Mitterman and Carl Strom, with ties to rumored plots and fear among workers.
Mrs. Lyle Lancaster, a widow living at 139 Rawzer Street, was fatally shot by Hubert Flynn at her home while seated at a sewing machine. Flynn, visitor to her daughter, produced a loaded pistol and fired, reportedly not yet arrested as police investigated.
May 16 forecast shows fair conditions for Georgia, the Carolinas with showers and storms in Virginia and North Carolina, and Tennessee. Mississippi and Texas regions expect fair to warm, with Western Florida seeing showers and storms and light winds in Kentucky. Local temperatures indicate above normal warmth with variable winds and scattered precipitation across the 24 hour period.
