Florida House Passes Redistricting and Dispensary Debates
In Tallahassee on May 16 the Florida Senate cleared its calendar and passed bills granting Palatka city powers, upholding constitutional court jurisdiction, and regulating dredging while extending labor label protections. The House approved a redistricting plan creating a north south peninsula division for a new congressman, with sharp debate over an east west substitute. The dispensary bill faced heated exchanges with postponement votes and amendments redirecting net proceeds to public schools. A $100,000 capitol expansion item was carried over, and Greater Tampa consolidation hearings featured strong testimony for and against annexation, amid a tense legislative mood. A convict leasing resolution for state institutions will be considered next.
