Terrible storms cause widespread damage and derailments

Reports from Leavenworth and nearby cities describe tornadoes and heavy rain tearing through the region on May 7. The Leavenworth carpet factory was destroyed, Odd Fellows hall roof torn off, homes uprooted, and rail service disrupted across several lines with trains ditched and injuries reported. In Cucc o and nearby towns, depots and churches suffered unroofing and destruction, with a quarter of a million dollars in losses cited and Mississippi weather conditions noted.
