Willard's Career Shaped South Carolina Politics Enduringly
Columbia May 4 Special The death of A J Willard in Washington closes a career that helped define South Carolina politics. A former lieutenant colonel, he led a colored regiment at Honey Hill in 1864, then served on the state supreme court from 1868. He played a pivotal role in the Wade Hampton era court battles over state government, including the Wallace vs Hayne case, and was chief justice from 1877 to 1880. Known for careful, if dense, opinions, Willard stood for judicial restraint amid widespread corruption.
