Special to The Constitution from Carraxoosas Tenn May 4 D. F. Walker the murderer of Samuel S Hardberger on Sand mountain November 6 1882 was executed at Trenton before about 3000 people. He confessed partial guilt and denounced Treece as an accomplice while recounting the crime and his wife and children. A long farewell included prayers by local ministers and the crowd listened as the trap fell at 1 37 pm. The body remained in the courthouse tonight and will likely be buried in Trenton. History of the murder recounts Walker’s violent life and the plot with Treece to murder Elisha Smith for money. The pair were captured after Hardberger’s body was found and in court Treece testified against Walker. His wife showed great distress but Walker remained unmoved as the death sentence was carried out.
A grim court report details a convicted man awaiting light by execution and his mother selling the farm to ease his sentence. In Gainesville a colored man John Lee was hanged for murder in 1882 after stealing a horse. the drop occurred at 12 15 p m as Crockett died, marking another note in a parade of grim sentences abroad.
