London May 4 The duke of York is betrothed to Princess May of Teck and the queen has commented on the match.
Gresham telegraphs to Governor Pennoyer urging protection for Chinese as exclusion law nears effect. Pennoyer replies he will handle Oregon laws himself and criticizes the president for asking state authorities to enforce federal powers.

In San Francisco on May 3 Mrs. Worthington mortally wounds Henry Badde ly after a history of pursuit and prior elopement with Badde ly. The shooting occurred on Ashington street wharf and follows a pattern of jealous incidents, with Badde ly previously forgiven yet continuing to press advances.

A historic reservoir in Logan county Ohio has burst its banks. The Lewiston reservoir, one of the world’s largest artificial bodies of water, has flooded vast areas, threatening Sidney Piqua and Dayton among others. While no lives are reported lost yet, extensive property damage and displacement are feared as the floodwaters continue to rise and threaten the Miami valley.

Albany May 3 Special. A touring company called the Jolly Roamers with star Cora Van Tassell faced collapse after her scandalous conduct. Backed by Albany men, the venture disintegrated as she was photographed amid a compromising liaison with a young scion, prompting termination and departure for New York. The troupe’s financiers cancel plans for the world’s fair and await Columbus’s anniversary.
In Wolf Lake Indiana Theophilus Pendleton returned home intoxicated and assaulted his wife, killing her, then killed his six month old infant by striking its brain against a stove. He finally ended the scene by taking his own life in a suicide.
The University Club of Cincinnati votes to blackball Solomon L. Swartz, a Jewish attorney, amid protests by Jewish members and threats of retaliation. The rejection mirrors New York’s Union League case, with few votes cast against Swartz and no clear reason beyond his Hebrew faith. Swartz is a university graduate and no other disqualifying charges are evident. The controversy stirs ill feeling within the club.
At Richmond May 4 the Davis Monument Association board authorized reinterment of Mr Davis's children in Hollywood Cemetery on July 1. Bodies to be brought from elsewhere and lie in state in the Capitol rotunda with a capstone caisson and black mourning drapery at entrances. A separate note reports Gov Carr ordering execution of a death warrant for a Richmond County man tied to a prior arsenic poisoning and a separate fire incident at the World’s Fair.
