Dr Chiles Cofton Ferrell president of West Pratt Coal Company was killed during a burglary at the Praco mining camp 39 miles from Birmingham Alabama. He was with two children and a Black servant when an intruder fired on him after he discharged a public safety item. Two Black suspects were arrested within hours with a discharged safety item found in one confession. Ferrell, born 1836 in Greenville, educated at Vanderbilt and Paris, was a noted educator and author. He had recently become coal company president and moved to Praco. He is survived by his widow and two children.
