Colon April 20 A major fire raged after 2 o’clock this afternoon destroying more than half the city. Ten people died including two burglars, and several hundred were injured or rendered homeless as 16 000 to 12 000 residents lost belongings. The blaze gutted wooden buildings and banks with portions of the railway station burned. Local natives and two U S coast artillery units helped fight the flames as arrests for looting occurred.
Governor-elect Nat E. Barts expressed support for funding a state encampment for the national guard next summer. Judge Harris affirmed backing if funds are provided, noting the program offers preparedness benefits and community support from Rome.
