Evidence Closed in Sugar Trust Case
New York March 28 the defense in the trial of John E Parsons Washington B Thomas and other directors of the American Sugar Refining Company for alleged violation of the criminal clause of the Sherman law rested its case today after District Attorney Wise completed a grueling cross examination of Mr Parsons. Tomorrow the entire day probably will be consumed by opposing attorneys in summing up. Wise sought to rebut defense claims that the Segal refinery was overcapitalized and built for cut throat competition and that the trust itself had organized the National Sugar Refinery Company of New Jersey. Wise asked if the total value of the National Sugar plant is only 5 090 000 Parsons responded the total stock is only 20 000 000. Wise asked if it was the policy of the American company to buy all refineries that owners could not run at a profit Parsons said he did not think so.
