Charles C. Hartwell, once in charge of William Deering & Co in Rochester, N C, is arrested in Chicago street tale as a fugitive from justice, a forger and an embezzler. He admits guilt with a $3,500 shortage and forged farmer notes used to cover his scheme.
Knoxville special report says Litral Bacon a Roane county leader in business and politics killed himself in Kingston by lighting a dynamite fuse. He had testified as a key witness in the Himes murder trial and faced perjury indictments. Neighbors described a grim blast leaving his body blown apart, with no motive stated.
Sheriff Good of Scott County Tenn arrested nine citizens on charges of taking part in the lynching of John Murphy who was hanged after being taken from Huntsville jail. The accused are prominent locals from Bowlin’s neighborhood, with at least four identified among the lynchers. It is believed the mob will face punishment.

Port Royal South Carolina March 27 The battleship Indiana was floated into the government dry dock on Paris Island with fifteen inches clearance after fog delayed the operation. Officials hope the dock remains sound and capable to hold any navy ship while observers celebrate the harbor’s achievement. Dr Peters plans resignation from German colonial service and may join foreign service in Somalia.
Washington March 2 The legislative appropriation bill cleared the Senate after a week of debate on a section funding district attorneys clerks and marshals and a provision altering New Mexico legislative meeting time. Senator Hill accused the provision of sneaking in a political amendment. The bill passed and the Senate adjourned until Monday as lore of political maneuvering persisted around New Mexico and territorial governance.
