Reports from Louisville Kentucky and Jeffersonville Indiana describe a powerful cyclone that wrecked the western part of Louisville and damaged Jeffersonville across the Ohio. Telegraph lines collapsed, many buildings collapsed, dozens of deaths and hundreds injured feared. officials warn of widespread ruin as rescue efforts begin.
In the House of Commons Ben Piilip Stanhope pressed whether the status quo with Portugal was still active while Saimen Ferguson stated no restoration condition existed. the government urged withdrawal of Portuguese forces as a prelude to talks. Sir Michael Hicks-Beoch moved to read a bill on tithes anew, aiming to balance justice for colonists and debtors amid fiscal strain. James A Picton opposed, calling the bill a plunder smuggling scheme and warning of public opinion manipulation. George Osborne Morgan criticized the Welsh impact, arguing the measure would do little beyond aiding a church funding agenda. Also, a Bristol traffic association in Bresmorp, Va formed, naming officers and noting ties to Richmond and Danville rails.
Debates over a pension bill to pay twelve dollars monthly to incapacitated veterans and dependents unfold in Congress. Representatives of the National Cordage Association argued before the Ways and Means Committee at Washtveron on March 27 against raising duties on fibres used for rope and twine making. Edwin Wt and William M Fitler of Philadelphia and B Hinckl of Boston urged rejection of the proposed rise, saying it would ruin cordage makers and not protect farmers as the fibre is not produced domestically. The committee restored the old duty on whiting and Pana white, while other industry groups pressed for anti special features in the bill.
Commodore Joseph Coghlan of the navy stood before a court martial charged with conduct unbecoming an officer for writing a newspaper article critical of naval administration. Witnesses refused to testify, impairing proof, and civil witnesses are not compelled by naval courts. Coghlan appeals to be restored to duty aboard the Mohican, a move not favored by the Navy.
A Farmers' reform convention met in the state capital under Hien Tillman of Edgefield. Delegates from counties discussed overthrowing the current government, nominating a state ticket with W G Tothert as temporary chairman. The platform calls for primary nominations of state officials, school reform, economy, and railroad oversight.
Representatives Bland and J. R. Williams Submitted the minority report opposing the Windom bill. They warn it would demonetize silver and undermine the party system, asserting the measure is an unsafe experiment that could worsen the current political impasse.
