A minority report calling for Jewell and Thomas as delegates sparked clashes before the platform was adopted affirming protectionist tariffs and opposition to silver coinage.
The New York Republican platform declares support for business governance and nominates Governor Levi P. Morton as the party's presidential candidate. Delegates to the St Louis convention are instructed to promote his nomination and the state committee is empowered to fill vacancies. The convention adjourned at 9:47 p.m. after a brief session and rapid dispersal to hotels.
Minnesota Republicans at Minneapolis rally for William McKinley name him favorite son for president. They endorse Monroe doctrine policy, pledging reciprocity, united coinage stance supporting gold and silver, and strong tariffs to safeguard American industry and wages. James A. Tawney and Cushman Davis send telegrams.
In Austin Texas March 24 the republican state convention delayed due to contested delegations. Allison and McKinley factions clashed as credentials deciders seated delegates from San Antonio and Austin. By night, temp chair race chaotic. McKinley allies seek three of four delegates with two likely and no instructions.

In Washington the senate debated Mr Mills joint resolution seeking from Spain the right of self government for Cuba or U S military action to establish a Cuban government. Mills argued for Monroe doctrine rights, condemned Weyler, and pressed the U S to prevent any European transfer of Cuba, insisting the island remain under Cuban self rule or U S guardianship.
Washington March 24 managers in charge of Cuban resolutions failed to agree this afternoon and adjourned to meet tomorrow at 2 o'clock. They expect the Senate conferees to approve first and second clauses and strike the third, aiming for a report satisfactory to both houses. Hearings on the Nicaragua canal bill set for Friday before the house commerce committee.
In Washington March 4 Boutelle of Maine attempted to reopen Civil War issues by opposing a bill allowing service eligibility for ex confederate soldiers. Republicans defended the measure while Grosvenor Grow and Walker argued loyalty to the Union. Boutelle alone voted no as the debate showed civil war themes fade from politics.
Washington March 24 unfinished business included a bill by Bil Curtis to limit capital crimes, passed. House agreed to senate request for Cuban revolutions conference. Naval appropriation bill for 1897 reported by Boutelle carries 1,779,128 with 12,611,084 for navy increase. Provisions cover contracts for coast defense ships, torpedo boats, and domestic manufacture with geographic deployment and cost limits. contracts to be made within 90 days. House adjourned to tomorrow.
