In Montgomery Alabama this morning Joelack Preston Smith shot and killed Nelson Lee in the rear of Dempsey's saloon on Bell street. Lee had paid too much attention to Smith's sweetheart triggering the fatal confrontation. Smith fled and has not been captured. Lee recently moved from Birmingham. Smith is known to police.
American cyclist Joe Nelson defeated Welsh rider Jimmy Michael in a ten kilometre match at the Velo drome Buffalo. The course covered 12.428 miles with a time of ino minutes and 1725 seconds. Concurrent levee updates from Arkansas and Mississippi described revetment work, labor issues, and a private levee breach at Hamp Davis place in Issaquena county flooding thousands of acres.
Washington March 22 Brigadier General Leonard Wood today filed a voluntary statement with the secretary of war in response to charges by Major E G Rathbone ex director general of Cuban posts He sails for Manila Thursday and will appear before the Cuban committee to answer further charges He defends his attendance at the Jai Alai noting the Spanish bishop attended the dedication and that his aim was to foster cordial relations with Spaniards in Cuba He describes the jai alai institution as legally licensed with betting and drinking and recounts receiving a silver service gift from Spanish merchants which he says was duty free and proper He stands ready to testify before Congress but will not engage in newspaper controversy.
The inquest into Edwin D. Burdick’s death resumes in Judge Murphy’s court tomorrow at 2 p.m. The first witness is likely attorney George C. Miller, followed by Miss Lizzie Romance and Mrs. Alice Burdick. Testimony may cover Burdick’s domestic life, Pennell’s alibi, and whereabouts before and after the murder on February 26.
