A large Atlanta delegation in Washington pressed for troops to be stationed and mustered out in Atlanta after April 1, facing five days’ quarantine delay. Secretary Alger and officials cited transport limits and state rules, while urging possible selective landings and swift discharge for southern regiments.
Sherman is in critical condition aboard the Ameri can line steamer Paris after a visit by American excursionists in the West Indies. The Chicago cruiser has not yet arrived but is expected to meet Paris at Santiago de Cuba. Paris is likely to touch Guantanamo first as doctors warn Sherman may not survive the night.
Reports indicate Senator Penrose will resign after adjournment of the Pennsylvania legislature. Governor to appoint Hon. M. S. Quay to the vacancy, with the term expiring in 1901.

Anniston Alabama March 9 Special The Third Alabama regiment colored was mustered out yesterday and today. Most men returned home across the state as special trains were run to accommodate them. The regiment was praised for exemplary conduct, the last of five volunteer regiments to be mustered out here and the most orderly. Colonel Bullard received a gold watch with presentation by Adjutant Brumby. Also reports from Rome about Don Carlos securing advances from bakers pending peace ratifications between Spain and the allied powers.
Chattanooga Tenn March 20 Hon W J Bryan was guest of the Bryan Birthday Anniversary Club and received an ovation. He spoke at the City auditorium before about 6000 people on imperialism taxation money trusts and democracy. He warned against criminal aggression and urged adherence to American ideals and Jeffersonian democracy.
New York Police report two charred bodies found among Windsor hotel ruins as hundreds work in eight hour shifts to sift brick. Dead total rises to twelve with many guests and servants still missing. Mrs Price of Macon Georgia and Mrs Sorrel of Georgia improving after injuries. General Sorrel travels from Savannah to assist.
Montgomery March 2. News from Naftel county reports a distressing case where an aged father in law, Colonel J B McLendon, allegedly shot and killed his son in law Frank Vann after Vann reclaimed his children. Self defense is claimed by the McLendons amid conflicting reports of who fired the shot.
A Manila AP correspondent reports the American flying brigade fought under extreme conditions in Calatau with waters mangrove swamps and thick jungles hindering visibility. Troops faced uncertain numbers while rebels proved fiercer than expected and looting occurred as rains threaten to force withdrawal to barracks. Philippine Commission meets in Manila for preliminary organization.
Walter T. Humphrey assaulted Charles P. Lane editor of The Evening Tribune in Huntsville Alabama as Lane walked on Washington Street near the Struve building. Humphrey, son of council member J. D. Humphrey, knocked Lane down and fought on top until bystanders intervened. No weapons were used. The fight followed an editorial criticizing Dr. J. D. Humphrey and his role in municipal affairs.
The Woodmen of the World adjourned sine die as delegates proceed to adjust laws for new membership. Officers to be installed. 158 sections of the laws report reviewed. next biennial meeting site to be chosen among Columbus Charleston or New Orleans, with New Orleans leading contender.
Adjutant General Washington lists deaths at Camp Columbia Havana. Sergeant H. M. Barrier of Fleet North Carolina died on the 16th from typhoid. Private John McDonald of company I Second immunes died on the 17th.
In Chattanooga a Suuth Chatta nooga butcher John Clarke stabbed soldier Jovett Keessler of Company B Second Infantry during a drunken quarrel in Huntsville camp. Keessler sustained a four wound arm injury likely ending his service member's use. The incident occurred March 20 as Special report from Chattanooga.
China and Italy move toward patching recent differences as Admiral Canevero meets Sir Chi Chen. The Chinese minister is to be received by King Humbert, signaling progress in addressing San Mun Bay concessions amid a cordial exchange reported by The Tribuna. Admiral Greneth also announces congratulations from Emperor William on command in Chinese waters.
In Knoxville Tennessee on March 20 the Tennessee river surged to thirty feet the highest since 1887. The riverfront bluff prevents overflow into town, but warehouses and wharves, near the edge, are submerged or partially covered. Driftwood and farm produce flow downriver, and steamboat traffic halts due to heavy drift. Rain has ceased and a gradual receding is expected tomorrow.
President McKinley and party arrived via the revenue cutter Colfax. Speaker Reed greeted the president with cordiality at the dock. Spanish vessels waved flags in his honor as the party relaxed at Jekyl Island, with a light welcome and informal exchanges.
