The Lamport and Holt steamer Heverlus, arriving from Hi Ja nefro via Bahia Pernambuco and St Lucia, was held for disinfection after a sailor named Charles Walther died of yellow fever on March 1. He was Swedish, thirty years old, and buried at sea. The ship’s health certificate cited mortality from yellow fever at Rio Janeiro. In the two weeks before departure, 431 fever cases and 9 deaths were reported from the same cause.
