New York March 17 Chairman Ientz of the chamber of commerce special committee on sound financial legislation says many responses have come to the declaration adopted March 24 urging both parties to declare for the gold standard. He denounces conventions from Ohio and Rhode Island as disgraceful and urges parties to state their stance on coinage. He warns the fight is on and will continue to the finish.
Frankfort Ky March 27 The Kentucky legislature adjourned amid turmoil with militia on capitol grounds and martial law in effect. Revenue bills fail, debt rises to 800000 and projected 1500000 by June as Blackburnites clash with Democrats over silver and policy. Judges decline to sit. special election planned April 11 for late senator’s seat.
In a crowded house the election was blocked as Democrats and Republicans refused to vote. Two votes for Boyle were cast by Burnham and Garrett, provoking uproar and laughter. The president declared the assembly adjourned, ending the prolonged struggle for the Kentucky seat.
Washington March 1 The house naval committee decided to recommend constructing four battleships and flyorpedo boats. Battleships of about 11 000 tons cost up to 3 750 000 each. Large torpedo boats cost 830 000 total with ten smaller vessels funded at 500 01. Total program 1 259 250 in present year. Large ships speed 26 knots. smaller 2 knots. Vote 7 to 6 for four ships. Hilborn amendment then carried unanimously.
The battleship Massachusetts sailed from Cramp's shipyard for an unofficial builders' trial to test engines and machinery. About 250 shipyard workers aboard, a 48 hour voyage to a course off the Delaware capes. Notables invited include Pay Director Kindleberger and Admiral Munkaroff among others. Edwin S. Cramp supervised the trial with Captain Sargent at the wheel.
San Francisco report on Dr. Brown shows charges dismissed and a reprimand defeated. The council completed its findings after a lengthy session and will present the report at the church prayer meeting tomorrow night.
Jackson and Walling, alleged murderers of Pearl Bryan, have been transferred to Kentucky authorities and are jailed in Newport. The trip occurred tonight with no incidents aside from crowds at the Cincinnati jail. They were ordered committed to jail before Judge Helm.
Havana reports insurgent strength near 43,000 with estimates up to 60,000 if all noncombatants are counted. Leaders Gomez Maceo and Barderas command diverse regional forces, with Matanzas Havana and Santa Clara as major hubs. Armament ranges from well mounted, well armed to machetes, with telegraph wire used as improvised ammunition. The Cuban army faces Spanish guns, but insurgents persist amid shortages and constant fire.
Philadelphia March 17 Judge Butler in U S circuit court refused a new trial for the Horsa steamer officials convicted of organizing a military expedition to Cuba to aid Spain. Captain J H S Wiborg got 300 dollars fine and 1 year 4 months at Eastern Penitentiary. mates Jana J Petersen and Hans Johansen each fined 100 dollars with eight months in county prison. Sentences later adjusted to one year for the mates to fit penitentiary terms. Case to be carried to the supreme court on appeal with bail pending argument.
Washington reports indicate revenue marine and naval officials anticipate another chase after Cuban filibusters. The British steamship Bermuda, sailing from New York supposedly to Vera Cruz, Mexico, is said to have taken on board the Cuban defender Garcia and thirty four men recently arrested with him. The expedition also expects to meet the Commodore, who left Charleston last week.
Washington March 17. Hubbard Missouri member of the committee on Pacific railroads has drafted a bill to settle the indebtedness of the Pacific roads. The treasury to determine the total due to July 1 1896 and demand payment from bonds issuing roads by July 1 next with sale of road property if unpaid. If unsold the president to appoint three government trustees and workers to form a parallel board. Part earnings to employees and profits toward debt liquidation. Unsold lands to revert to public domain.
The confrontation at Chamberlin's in Washington on March 17 involved Senator Pugh of Alabama punching Don M. Dickinson, a friend and manager of Mr. Cleveland, after Dickinson allegedly insulted silver democrats. Dickinson apologized after the blow. Pugh defended his action and said he would repeat it if provoked.
Crawford Goldsby alias Cherokee Bill was hanged at 2 43 p m after declaring he came to die. He kissed his mother, smiled as the cap was drawn, and died in ten minutes. His mother stood by without flinching as the trap was sprung. He was born at Fort Gibson I T in February 187?, part of the Cook gang during the 1890s. His final robbery led to his capture and execution after a long legal back and forth ending with the sentence to die in January 1896.
Miss Alice Smith an eighteen year old girl in Springfield Jacksonville suburb committed suicide at her home. A note expressed she must die to end her sufferings after earlier chloroform attempts and a hinted broken heart. The pistol belonged to her father who died at the Atlanta exposition last fall.
