At Palmetto Georgia yesterday a mob killed four African Americans in a warehouse, with grisly scenes of grief and fear among women. Authorities report fifteen masked lynchers from camps nearby led the attack. investigations seek origin of the mob and justice for the victims.
A deadly street duel in Hot Springs Ark kills five officials and a delivery driver amid a fierce local politics clash. Chief Thomas Goslee and Sergeant Thomas Goslee, City Detective James Hart, delivery driver Louis Hinkle, and John O Williams die. Deputy Sheriff Edward Spears wounded. Police and officials clash as factions of Goslee and Williams contend. riot follows near Lemp's beer depot.
Governor Candler criticizes the Palmetto affair as cowardly and bloody, condemning both the white mob and the black participants. He links the violence to passing negro regiments, urges swift justice, and vows Georgia will stop such outrages and punish perpetrators.
President McKinley spent nine hours driving sandy roads and pine forests near Thomasville Georgia with Mark Hanna and staff. He handled the reins himself and appeared in high spirits at the Country Club where he was met by local officials Captain Metcalf and S G McLendon.
The body of Herbert Gilmore, a young stenographer and only son of a widow, was found in a small closet in room 106 of the Equitable building. A wire cord around his neck, stab wounds on the left wrist and right forearm, and a pool of blood marked a self inflicted death driven by a painful brain disease. His mother, who adored him, learned of the tragedy as friends gathered and the coroner was notified.
