Leper Colony Fire Safety Plan At Louisiana Home
New Orleans March 16 A model fire fighting system manned by inmates forms part of a broader improvement plan at the Louisiana Leper Colony near Carville. Governors seek legislative funding for a light and power plant a refrigeration system and sewerage disinfection to curb disease spread. The colony now houses eighty seven lepers and aims to expand to care for all in Louisiana. Doctors note work among lepers is not much more dangerous than tuberculosis care and plan diversions to aid patient well being. Although cures are disputed physicians say no patient has been officially cured and discharges have occurred only after long treatment.
