The British steamer Sedgmore landed the crew of the American schooner Melville, Cahill, from Philadelphia, at Liverpool for Beaufort. Capt. Cahill’s men were taken off March 3 after the Melville was dismasted and her boats gone following a drift since February 13.

Robert Ranes, a 9 Well Known Floridian, was shot and killed about 1 AM in a Gainesville house of ill fame run by Mine Dillon. Four Ranes relatives and two friends visited the house. after blocking entry, he forced his way into the parlor where pistol fire rang out. Ranes died on the porch. motive and shooter unknown.
A clash in Opelousas between regulators and special peace officers left three wounded, one possibly fatally. Five regulators were arrested after about 15 to 20 shots were fired as the mayor mobilized peace officers to restore order following the Roy brothers’ disturbances in St Landry parish and Ville Platte.
Chattanooga March 13 Specal The jury in the Ladd poisoning case is still out at Sceltshoro Alabama. In June 1893 S W Hanbrey received whisky by mail at Carpenter post office and after a drink grew ill. The whisky sent to Chattanooga contained strychnine. Det Haskins arrested postmistress Birs Troup and B E and N D Ladd. N D Ladd discharged others bound over to court. First trial ended in mistrial.
