Old trumpet will go home to Columbus fire dept
Indianapolis March 10 Special There was sent from this city today to the fire department of Columbus Georgia a relic prized an old silver trumpet used by fire chiefs and captains The trumpet bears an engraved plate noting it was presented to Henry T Hall for valuable services to the Columbus department on December 25 1849 JH Barlow of Tinton bought the trumpet at a pawn shop to return it to Columbus He was a second lieutenant of Company I 160 Indiana regiment during the Spanish American War and was quartered at Columbus for a time The hospitality shown to Indiana troops moved him to act.

Pennell and wife perish in cliffside auto plunge
Buffalo Buffalo N Y March 10 Arthur R Pennell a leading figure in the Burdick murder case and his wife died when their electric car swerved from Kensington Avenue onto the Gehrs quarry edge near Fillmore avenue. Mrs Pennell survived initial injuries but could not speak clearly. Witnesses described a sudden plunge as the car toppled into the quarry. Police and Captain Cable traced the ride while Mrs Pennell remained at Sisters hospital in critical condition. Pennell had discussed the Burdick case with authorities and had been linked to Mrs Burdick in past investigations. The morgue later displayed his distorted features and found life insurance cards on him.

At Danville Virginia two passenger trains collided in the yard of the Southern Railway. James E. McArthur of Gaffney South Carolina and W E Neal of Rural Hall North Carolina were instantly killed. Joe Coleman of Danville was badly hurt with an arm amputated. McArthur recently left mercantile work to enter the livery business and had just taken out life insurance. The wreck occurred after orders to pass at Danville were not delivered to the northbound train.

Moses Swetzer Dies Aged 83 In Lynn Mass
Moses Swetzer died in Lynn Massachusetts at age 83. He donated land in Elizabethport New Jersey to the New York Typographical Union for a home for aged and indigent printers. During the Civil War he was twice captured by forces under General Fitzhugh Lee. In 1865 he partnered with Colonel J. Forney of The Philadelphia Press in The Washington Chronicle.
