More than two hundred delegates from across the state attend the Woodmen of the World second biennial convention in Atlanta. The three day session opened yesterday with a public meeting in the Aragon hotel's assembly hall.
Delegates set up headquarters at a city hotel and are treated lavishly by Woodmen of the World locals. The assembly hall opened with a prayer by Rev. Lynn R. Walker. Welcome addresses came from Mayor Robert F. Maddox, C B Mc Gehee of Atlanta, and General Joseph L. Stoppelhein mayor of Smyrna. Responses were given by Mayor FR R. Mertin of Dawson and Percy Sugden of Savannah. An executive session followed for order members, with a theater party at the Orpheum last night and another morning session to name year officers. This afternoon the Woodmen plan a trolley tour for visiting sovereigns and a ride around the city assist by federal authorities.
Mrs M P Lockhart and Rev Charles Woolfram were bound over after police court testimony described a deadly murder plot to poison J J Lockhart. The pair, aged about 25 and 36, deny certainty of the crime while detailing a tale of love and betrayal across multiple residences and marriages.
The council committees on electric and railways tried to meet yesterday but a quorum could not be formed. Busy men present wished to speak on Piedmont Power Company’s franchise petition to lay conduits erect poles and wires to supply the city with power towers. Chairman Winn announced another committee meeting set for Thursday at 3 o clock.
Friends say former superintendent Captain Robert L. Barry resigned due to declining health and not because of a dispute with Dr. Amos Fox purchasing guard for the grounds. Captain A W Force named to lead the Confederate Veterans camp with confirmation pending at Atlanta trustees meeting.
A severe afternoon storm drenched Atlanta from 5 15 pm with lightning and thunder. Rain totals reached about 1 65 inches in two hours 15 minutes and streetcars ran at high volume as stores flooded and telephones failed in parts of the city. Officials noted record rainfall for the month and forecast fair, cooler weather with frost possible tonight.
New York March court proceedings reveal John C. Lumsden, NC inventor, claiming self defense after gunning down broker Harry Suydam in Suydam’s curb market office last December. Police report and witness testimony show Lumsden stating self defense and recounting threats as he pursued funds. Mrs Kate Suydam testified to her husband’s hospital visit, while defense argued her testimony served emotional impact.
The J Boot Camp No 8 will present an exemplification of degree week tonight at seven eighty o clock in Woodmen hall followed by a banquet at the Aragon at rock. The convention runs through tomorrow with a morning business session from 9 am to 2 pm and adjournment afterward.
A destructive tornado swept Brinkley Arkansas last night leaving thirty or more dead and around sixty injured. The Roman Catholic church was the only building to escape, while main streets and hotels were wrecked and entire blocks lay in ruins. Relief squads and railways assisted in rescue and care for the injured.
A cyclone struck Cuthbert causing fatalities and damage across the town as residents reel from the sudden disaster. Local officials report multiple deaths and widespread destruction amid toppling trees and power outages. Authorized agencies coordinate rescue and relief efforts.
A tornado smashed Cuthbert Georgia at 830 pm injuring about 30 and killing seven. The business section was wiped out with several brick buildings demolished and the Negro quarter hardest hit. Whites reported no deaths but several injured. Damage around 100000, with most losses due to fire and collapse.
