Intelligence reports the sinking of the German steamship Albano after a life crew rescue. Second mate drowned as Bowen towed a barge, while Admiral’s crew were saved. twelve persons missing and presumed lost. Captain Koch of the Albano and the Bowen’s superintendent are named in the account.
Definite information reaches Norfolk that the tug Bowen was lost with all on board during a snow storm while towing the dredge Admiral to Philadelphia. Eleven men perished. the dredge crew were picked up by the German steamship Albano and landed at Point Comfort. Captain William Cannon of Camden was among the rescued. several named crew members are listed as lost. The Albano second mate drowned during rescue efforts. survivors endured extreme cold and exposure.
In Jefferson City Missouri a legislative proposal would arm prisoners threatened with lynching The plan by Rep Nicholas from Norway County imposes fines from 100 to 1600 dollars and removes the sheriff or deputy who fails to protect such prisoners from office duties and privileges
Lionel Cowden, now in Mexico, will depart for Havana to take the post of consul general. A Havana cablegram says Lucien J Jerome, acting consul, is named British consul there, noted as one of the youngest in the service with a strong reputation.
Kingston Jamaica March 8 The United States gunboats Annapolis and Vicksburg arrived here in advance of other ships of the American squadron. Free entertainments are being planned by civil and naval authorities for Rear Admiral Sampson and his party during their visit. Strong sentiment for the United States is shown by the display of American flags throughout the city and along the port.
The Condor brings 41 passengers from Bluefields detailing a failed uprising in Central America. Rough riders led by Reyes and other Americans attempted attack on Greytown, aided by gunboats San Jacinto and gunboat from Honduras. The plan collapsed after gunboats engaged, sides negotiated, and rebels retreated to Bluefields. A Spanish priest aiding rebels escaped aboard the Condor to safety.
Dr Cabwll White head assayer of the United States mint has accepted a Turkish government post and will soon go to Constantinople to supervise industrial duties. The Turkish minister Ali Ferrouh Bey sought American methods and machines to modernize industry and Whitehead will oversee large new manufacturing establishments and general management.

Thomas Donaldson world renowned diver from Bath Beach LI died after a 85 foot plunge from the Madison Square Garden platform. He lost control, struck head first, and a fractured skull with brain compression left him mortally wounded as surgeons predicted death within hours. Witnesses noted the cobra restraints loosened as he leapt, diverting his attention before impact.

In a joint session today M. L. Hayward was elected United States senator to succeed William V Allen. Hayward received seventy four votes from the Republican membership with one absentee due to sickness. Allen received eighty eight.
