Rear Admiral Henry Walker United States Navy died at his Brooklyn home after a grip attack followed by heart failure. Born on a Virginia plantation eighty eight years ago he commanded gunboats Taylor and Lexington during the Civil War and aided General Grant's retreat. He rose from captain in 1862 to commodore in 1865 and rear admiral in 1870, retiring in 1871. He leaves a widow three sons and two daughters.
In Paris on March day several hundred people attended the unveiling of a memorial tablet at the Passy villa Franklin occupied from 1777 to 1785. The tablet was presented by M Manuel, president of the Passy Historical Society, with remarks by M Fayey of the French Academy and acknowledgments from Ambassador J B. Some Republicans prefer McCreary to Carlisle if a sound money Democrat is unavailable. Joes Out of Business Hartford CT March 8 Charter Oak Driving Park Auction to sell all property Saturday April 4 wind up liquidation.
Nicholas Cole of Nightingale Cole throwing firm was arrested in Paterson after a brutal assault on Lizzie Van Riper near Hillson and Bastingteenth streets. A crowd of about 1000 men surrounded him, threatening lynching, as police pursued links to Mamie Sullivan's murder and questioned a possible connection. Cole is separated from his wife and seeks a divorce, and investigators consider him a possible suspect in the Sullivan case.
Stephen Powell a wealthy Long Island prominent figure was killed near his Fulton street home shortly after leaving his business on Main street. Police believe robbers targeted his large cash stores and hid by a street light opposite his gate. He was struck on the right eye and head with brutal blows as he passed the residence, sustaining severe injuries while defending himself.
In Jackson, Mississippi, a murder led to three arrests Van Rensselaer Simpson John A Wayne and Arthur Mayhew await coroner action while other suspects are held. Separately Republicans in Mississippi brawled at state and district conventions with factions like Lynch Hill and reports of money and influence shaping delegate votes for McKinley ahead of the St Louis nominating meeting.

The New York Republican State Committee chaired by Charlies W Hackett issued to the press that over forty county and assembly district conventions have endorsed Governor Morton for president and that 16 delegates elected thus far favor Morton. It states Morton delegates include Georgia Alabama Florida Mississippi Kentucky Texas, totaling 36 pledged to the St Louis convention. Also reports a separate note on a mayoral receiver appointment in Arkansas for the Smithton Lumber Company with assets around 200000 dollars.
A massive landslide on Portland Heights at 7 am wrecked Daniel McDonald’s dwelling, killed his daughter Belle 18 and his guest Daniel Campbell, and badly injuring McDonald, his wife, and younger daughter Mary. The mother rare iron bed was hurled out through a wall, Mary was rescued after being trapped, and Campbell was found suffocated in bed. Neighbors cleared debris laboriously. authorities determine the slide was triggered by a spring on the crest, while the McDonalds, though hurt, are reportedly well and respected.
Four dead, twenty nine badly hurt and about thirty lightly injured after an eastbound Clayton line car and a westbound car collide one mile west of Kirkwood. Conductor Peasley and Motorman Aiken commanded about eighty passengers and failed to wait at a siding. The wreck hurled one car back a hundred feet while the other car stalled on the track. Three youths boarded a Rock Island train near Joliet known as The Chute last night and attempted a robbery. A pistol-wielding passenger fired at the assailants who fled by jumping from the moving train. The conductor suspects it was a dareful escapade rather than a planned robbery.
Winter visitor from Ohio Mr. M. McDaniel was sandbagged and robbed in St. Petersburg Florida. He called for help as the robber fled. Policeman Irwin chased and caught Lula Hoffman who posed as a man. Other robberies cred ited to her.
