Graem Stewart, Republican National Committee man from Illinois, won a majority of delegates in the Chicago mayoralty Republican primaries. Stewart led with 331 delegates to rival John M. Harlan's 266, with 25 uninstructed. Stewart carried every delegate from the twenty-first ward. Harlan, a lawyer and son of Supreme Court Justice John M. Harlan, ran as an independent amid attacks on the Lorimer Jamieson machine.
