Preparation of the Soil and Distribution of Fertilizer
K J Redding of Virginia-Carolina Chemical Co summarizes soil prep for row crops. Deep plowing 6 to 10 inches in fall, thorough tillage, and harrowing produce mellow topsoil. Fertilizer should be applied before planting, with small in-furrow doses and limited nitrate in seed furrows for corn. Broadcast fertilization on row crops is discouraged. split applications work poorly in practice. Emphasizes intermixing fertilizer with soil in the furrow and warns against relying on fertilizer to compensate for poor prep.
