March 9 special from Washington describes a volatile session as representatives clashed over pension fraud claims and the Bland bill. Virginia’s Jedith accused widespread pension abuses while Illinois’ Funk and others squared off. The fracas ended with guards restoring order as the chamber adjourned briefly amid partisan tensions.
Lynchburg Virginia March 2 United States Senator John W Daniel announced General Jubal A Early had died at 10 30 pm in the presence of family and friends. Early born November 3 1816 at Franklin County Virginia rose from West Point to Civil War fame commanding brigades and divisions in battles at Williamsport Fredericksburg Gettysburg and the Shenandoah Valley before being relieved in 1865 He spent time in Europe and New Orleans later in life and remained a staunch Confederate all his days.
Bradstreet reports a cautious but improving business week with thirty factory resumptions and two shutdowns. Wages fall at several mills, fifteen strikes noted, and activity is uneven across regions. Despite south and Pacific weakness, the Ohio Mississippi northwest show stronger sales with reduced trade.

Doctors say his fever eased, skin cooled, and he likely needs nursing, food, and rest. A Consul General bulletin confirms the patient is doing well and may be up in ten days with caution to avoid setbacks.
A party of Americans on a hunting expedition in the Sierra Madre found two men in a ravine near Salto Mexico. H L Denton about 35 and T P Hall about 40 were missing for days and later found partly devoured by beasts. They were bath mining ten and had come from Colorado. Frank Turnstall of Pennsylvania remains missing.
In Knoxville Tennessee an influx of deserted wives has been reported with six cases in two weeks. Police statistician records show twenty six children among the abandoned families. Many husbands were strangers who came seeking work and left, forcing women to fend for themselves and their children.
