New Budget Director proposes immediate reductions in appropriations already set for the current fiscal year. Dawes signals sharp cost cuts to curb government spending under the Harding administration amid political tensions and Republican concerns.
Washington June 27 Director of the Budget Dawes says government expenditures can be trimmed about 25 percent. Secretary of War Weeks will report to a departmental mass meeting that the War Department already has shown it can reduce to that level in at least one branch. Weeks has requested $31,521.69 per month from departmental rentals since March 4 last, about a quarter of total monthly rental.
President Harding and Charles Dawes, budget director, initiate a thirty day push to slash federal expenses. They meet cabinet officers and subordinates to craft a tentative new budget for the fiscal year starting July 1, aiming to operate on less money than congress has granted. The move is bold and politically risky, with Dawes tasked to produce a plan within 30 days.
The United States railroad labor board extended its July 1 wage reduction to nearly all large railroads, maintaining an average twelve percent cut across 210 rounds. The order adds sections for marine workers with monthly pay scales in New Orleans, New York, Philadelphia, and other ports, plus Tennessee River and related duties. The decision aims at about four hundred million dollars in annual savings.

Daniel Quarles of Dawson claimed state protection after four disguised men broke into his home and whipped him. Captain G. W. Anderson and James R. Quillian then arrested four suspects: Captain Leadbetter, W. Dooly, J. Asheworth, and Levi Elrod. Politics had nothing to do with the incident.

Fire of unknown origin heavily damaged Toro's ItalIan restaurant on Peachtree Street near Ellis and The Man's Shop, waking guests at the Aragon and Winecoff hotels. Flames filled the upstairs restaurant, firemen fought hard, by 2 a.m. the blaze was under control with no damage to the Winecoff. The restaurant loss ran to thousands, while the haberdashery on the ground floor suffered water damage.
In Washington on June 27 a petty officer aboard the transport Henderson searched passengers before sailing after a bombing test in Hampton Roads. Prohibition officers found about 54 pints of Canadian liquor among dry Congress and newspaper reporters on board. Passengers faced no cancellations due to the seizure.

Galneaville Ga June 27 The body of Paul Rollins aged 19 who was drowned yesterday afternoon in Lake Warner while swimming had not been recovered today despite last night’s lake dragging and underwater dynamite explosions. Lester Gower who with Sherman Rolling was in the water tried to reach Rollins but had to abandon the effort to save himself.
Governor Thomas W. Hardwick will address the Georgia general assembly Friday morning outlining his administration’s policies. He will not specify any offices to be abolished, preferring a full review and let lawmakers decide which commissions endure. He will discuss finances and hold a conference with state house officials to discuss funding.
