C McClaughry deputy warden at the federal prison has sent a resignation letter effective August. He came to Atlanta in 1903 with Warden Moyer and rose to a leading prison keeper. His father Major McClaughry, Civil War veteran, was in charge of Leavenworth. Will McClaughry famed Bertillon expert aided fingerprints.
Washington reports a broad heatwave pushing temperatures to 100 in Phoenix and other cities. Official forecasts show no relief in the next forty eight hours with highs reaching near 104 in downtown Washington and scattered showers offering brief respite. Jobson’s husband Philip, a traveling salesman, and witnesses pursued details as police investigated the family shock wave.
A major fire at the Dunn Box and Lumber Company in Cornell Georgia destroyed the plant and burned fifteen car loads of lumber. Heat forced the Atlanta and Fort Valley Railway to reroute passenger traffic. rails and cross ties warped. Fire crews worked to control the blaze and reopen the line as soon as possible.
Declaring he would get a job, Hughee Turner the six year old son of Mr and Mrs W H Turner disappeared after leaving playmates near Idden and Nutting streets. Police and neighbors searched the city park and surrounding streets as anxious parents, including real estate man Mr Turner of Inman Building, awaited news.
A man named George Barness pawns his young son's shoes to buy carbolic acid and uses the proceeds to attack his wife with a pocket knife, then swallows poison and dies. The wife is not seriously injured. The incident is linked to a broader report of murder and a royal assassination in Stockholm.
In San Francisco attorney Stanley Moore said he would file a motion to impeach Assistant District Attorney Francis J Heney and another alleging Judge Lawlor biased after a trial of Patrick Calhoun’s bribery case ended with a jury disagreement. In Richmond Washington a launch tank explosion injures four dozen whites and a Black man jumps overboard, likely drowning.
Judge Joe Brown assumed office as governor of Georgia in a ceremonial transition at the state capitol. The former chief magistrate addressed attendees noting aims to advance state governance and public safety initiatives.
In a full Hall of Representatives ceremony Joseph Mackle Brown takes the oath to serve as Georgia’s chief executive for two years. Chief Justice William H. Fish administers the oath as ex governor Hoke Smith passes the Great Seal, amid crowd fervor and formal reception.
