Splendid Object Lesson in Value of Good Roads
Culpeper Virginia June 20 Specials A striking object lesson in the value of good roads showed the 20 mile coal haul from Southern Railway tracks to Sperryville by a three ton motor truck. The 18 tons of coal were moved in two and a half days, four trips, previously two weeks by a six mule team. The Smoot Sons Company tannery at Sperryville will use the truck to transfer coal and hides to the tannery and goods to market. Federal aid for better roads is urged to end the “bad roads tax” and reduce transport costs for farmers and manufacturers.

Early Atlanta recollections of a Palmetto regiment veteran
In 1846 the Palmetto regiment encamped on the Atlanta hotel block near the old Georgia road near Marthasville later named Atlanta. The veteran recalls Marthasville as muddy and small, meeting Bondwey Kind locals, and describes rail progress, the West Point road, and a 30 mile march out to Montgom ery. He served in Mexico and advised Douglas and Stephens at the courthouse before 1860. He notes Atlanta’s growth to about 6,000 and his residence on McDonough Street now Capitol Avenue.
