In Swansville Indiana George Walters age twenty six was found dead at home. His wife maintains he killed himself while neighbors dispute the suicide claim. The coroner investigates as officials refuse to forgo an inquest despite Mrs Walters urging burial without one.
Columbus June 24 committee of the grand lodge of ERs heard city claims for the national home for aged and infirm. W M Drennen of Birmingham Alabama is on the committee. Offers of free sites arrived from Springfield Ohio Colonel WF cif Clay Wyoming and from Wayne county Wisconsin. An offer of two ranch houses valued at 23000 from W and Steatton of Colorado Springs. others from California and Pen or col. No decision reached.
In Matewan West Virginia on a June strike 700 union miners attempted to enter Maritime mines where non union workers were employed. Superintendent Lambert ordered guards to fire after warnings. Two union men Boyd Martin and Riley Johnson were killed and Sam Artrip wounded. Unionists dispersed vowing vengeance as Sheriff Hatfield with deputies stands ready.
Herbert Asquith condemns a pro-Boer resolution at Queen's Hall and argues for a federated South Africa. he denounces Boer independence and says Liberal divisions may persist. He predicts a large following for his stance and a leadership challenge within the party.
The American Institute of Homeopathy annually elected officers with Dr J Wood of Cleveland named president and Dr W S Hooker of Hartford as vice president. Charles Gauthier of Chicago was reappointed general secretary, with the treasurer and recording secretary retained. Morning sessions approved reintegration of the suborganization on eye ear throat and other specialties to avoid conflict and expand in-house options.
Chicago June 2 William J Bryen told Chicago reporters he supports Mark Hanna as the Republican presidential candidate for the next cycle and hopes the party nominates him, though he cannot guarantee party convention control. He declined to name a Democratic nominee, saying it is too early to discuss such a candidate. He added he plans a long career in a line of work ahead.
In Chicago six men Simon Axel, Jacob Axel, Liane Tuckhorn, Leon Frank, H Fenterseck, Louis Lampert and Benjamin Ettelson face grand jury bonds of 5000 each over an arson fraud conspiracy against insurance firms. Eight others ordered for involvement in the alleged scheme. Former detective Benjamin Preuss leads the case as details allege the men burned and damaged small mills to obtain insurance payments totaling 500 over two years.
In Cleveland on June 2 the Republican county convention heard Senator Hanns urge peace within the party and argue that the St. Louis platform promises were fulfilled under McKinley. He claimed prosperity followed the platform and said Republicans support the president by aiding a majority in Congress.
Havana June 2 Lieutenant Colonel Scott, sent to Cienfuegos to calm election disputes, reports ballots are still being counted under a military board. He says many fraudulent ballots were discarded, and predicts little disturbance regardless of the eventual outcome. The Cuban constitutional convention's conservative bloc seeks to sway the electoral commission against universal suffrage, though most members favor it as in the constitution. The commission hopes to finish by July.
In recent battles across Albay and Sorosogon provinces about forty insurgents were killed or wounded. Many insurgents reportedly return home as General Calles moves from Pagsanjan to Cayintí near Laguna. Commissary cases accuse witnesses of theft and sale of public property. Provost General Davis proposes a plan for Manila’s municipal government. The U S Philippine commission is refining it.
Vatican proposals on U S diplomatic representation in Rome failed to advance. Cardinal Gibbons departs for Florence for two weeks then travels to Dinan Normandy for a month of rest. He reportedly aided Cuba and Philippine issues and Catholic affairs in the United States.
A drunk clerk tried to strike the window of Crown Prince Frederick William’s carriage near Bochum Westphalia on June 20 as he traveled from Minden to Bonn. He was arrested after the attempted assault and said he only wished to see the prince more clearly.

In Chihuahua an angry ex-employee fired at Boss Shepard but caused no injuries. In Kaiser’s realm a monument to Frederick William the Great Elector was unveiled before the emperor and empress with a speech on military aims. General Bartlett’s body recovered after Staten Island ferry disaster, found in East River among river victims.
The Jersey City trial of Thomas G Barker for the February shooting of Rev. John Keller continued. Keller spoke in a low tired voice denying Barkers accusations while witnesses testified to Mrs Barker’s bad reputation and the insanity question, with experts debating Barker’s sanity at the time of the act.
Police report that Officer Er. DeBray was fatally shot on Gordon street while attempting to arrest a group of three suspected negro men. Eyewitnesses describe a decoy ruse as one suspect concealed a pistol and fired. DeBray returned fire and died within minutes. Isaac Hammond is detained as a potential conspirator. Police vow to pursue the killer amid four officer deaths in three years.
Kansas City June 20 Willam J Stone vice chairman of the Democratic National Committee and Missouri national committeeman said the elite third party movement started in Kansas yesterday seems mostly made up of men disappointed in politics and seeking leadership He said Lee Merriwether of St Louis leads the effort and warned a new Forsyth Springs convention would be blocked as absurd and easily turned down by the party Stone stressed standard Democrats would not yield control even if representatives sought a convention to gain it.
Supreme Lodge of the Knights of the Royal Arch met in Hot Springs to review amendments from Cincinnati and elect officers for a two year term. Represented states include Ohio Texas Arkansas Wisconsin Indiana Minnesota Tennessee with M J Barry elected supreme valiant commander and L D Cooper named to the board of trustees. The body adjourned to meet June 18 1903 in Milwaukee Wisconsin.
Chicago radio June 20 report says the Santa Fe railway will carry thousands of Italians to America and settle them on lands in southern California New Mexico Oklahoma and Texas. Agents tour Italy distributing Italian language literature with views of Santa Fe territory. The plan aims at colonizing the San Joaquin valley and may expand to other European countries after the Italian phase.
By the ditching of the Erie and Pittsburgh flyer at Transfer this evening four passengers were hurt, but none seriously. They are Miss Hannah Smith and William Howard of Greenville, Mrs. J. H. Snyder of New Castle, Thomas Kane of Jamestown, Pa. Just after leaving the station the rear axle of the tender broke, throwing the tender and baggage car,express and redistributed coaches from the track and turning them over.

In Munroe Indiana on June 20 a severe hailstorm swept southeastern Delaware County causing extensive losses estimated in the thousands of dollars. Wheat corn and fruit crops were damaged, fruit trees broken and the strawberry crop destroyed. About fifty farmers are financially ruined with total losses around thirteen thousand dollars. The storm affected a wide area within seven miles.
