A Dallas reporter describes a clash ten days past in the extreme northwest Texas near Polo Pinto County. Seven hostile Indians attacked a party led by D W Staples W W Hartsell and Hicks. In a several hour battle Hicks fell first, Staples died of a gunshot wound after an hour, and five Indians were killed while the rest fled. A lone survivor remains.
In Washington June 19 a Democrat drift favors Cleveland for the presidential nomination. Tammany signals strong New York support with a solid delegation. Saratoga echoes are mixed as Faulkner and Waterbury weigh Cleveland’s viability. A Republican rally in Washington drew thousands, with Mahone and Harrison among speakers amid a raucous crowd and a fire engine interrupting a speaker.
At the state convention Hon. J D G Atkin son and Hon. Robert L. Taylor were chosen officers as the majority and minority platform reports sparked hours of discussion. The minority sought an added revenue clause while the majority was tabled. Governor Bate was renominated. Chicago delegates favor Cleveland. The Indiana Republicans nominated W H Calkins for governor with a platform endorsing Blaine Logan and reform measures. The state ticket included Eugene Bundy as lieutenant governor and Bruce Carr as treasurer, with adjournment after a long day.

Washington June 1. J C P Burnside late post office department superintendent rearrested on warrant charging him with retaining 98000 realized from waste paper and other materials. He was released on 9032 500 bail. Investigation shows he began siphoning money from sales of old furniture and waste paper when entering office in 1870. He may face more warrants and grand jury action. Bondsmen for Burnside seek discharge as they fear for his life if he is released without police surveillance. Also Robert C Morgan former disbursing clerk of state department and head of bureau of accounts found a 32000 deficit. Morgan died two months ago. Morgan’s bondsmen are Whitehead, Angeles, and Bass, who are bound to cover the shortfall.
Testifying before the Springer investigation committee, Bliss said he tried to push other cases but Merrick advised against taking smaller cases. He noted conversations about not pursuing those cases and stated he did his best to handle the Dorsey matter.
