Georgia Governor Atkinson underwent a late night appendectomy after a perilous course with appendicitis. A Charleston man using the name J. P. Gerrard, a traveling agent for Ocean Steamship Co. of Savannah, checked into St. Charles Hotel and sought a year contract with The Sun for ads. He fled before 9:30 AM, leaving a bag, and a forged check on The Sun’s business manager I. J. Stuart. A second check no forgery was found. He later told T. L. Dumas he had lost money in a poker game and left for Atlanta, abandoning his trunk and satchel.
A June 17 cyclone struck Hartford Kansas and nearby communities, destroying about twelve houses and many barns. Widespread injuries include several Lawsons with three believed fatally hurt, plus others seriously hurt. In Columbus Ohio on June 17 the democrats of the county, home of Allen W Thur man, elected a solid anti free silver delegation to the state convention. Thur man s free silver candidate in his ward was overwhelmingly defeated. It is generally believed Senator Bryce will win the coinage fight and prevent a free silver plank at the state convention.
Massillon Ohio June 17 Mr Coxeys son in law Carl Browne is due to go to jail tomorrow for an indefinite period. He is under bond on a criminal charge the bond expires soon and Coxey says he will not renew it and advises friends not to renew either.
Montgomery June 17. Charles J. Armstrong a young man of good character was arrested on a warrant charging him with robbing a mail package containing 26000 in greenbacks sent by Josiah Morris & Co to New York. He allegedly found the torn sack and delivered the package after accompanying agents to the post office and transfer clerk’s residence. Armstrong, 24 and married, posted bond for 24 to appear in court tomorrow. He denies the charge.
A street duel in Bessemer between Bert Rockett and Al Benson left Rockett dead after both fired pistols in front of Rosenbaum’s store. Benson was not killed and was arrested on the scene, with bail denied. Rockett had previously worked for Benson and demanded unpaid salary, leading to earlier confrontations.
Fire yesterday caused more than 11000 damage to the Horace Ware residence on T Tieth street in Birmingham. The building valued between 3000 and 5000, with about 1000 furniture lost for Mrs Ware and varying insurance on belongings and other nearby properties.
