Teaching Georgia's Blind to See Through Their Fingers
Macon Ga June 14 Special Educating Georgia's blind children is a big task yet the state is shaping a fine program. The Forsyth road site covers twenty acres with a $100000 building on land bought after selling old property for $50,000. Seventy five blind children ages 6 to 18 receive training daily focusing on mind through hands, with emphasis on cooking sewing and music to help them return home. The academy reports alumni statewide including Coroner Paul Donehoe and Walter McDonald, with four blind instructors and a broom factory illustrating practical earnings after graduation. The program stresses independent living skills and crafts such as wood turning and piano tuning, guided by Superintendent George F. Oliphant.
