Washington June 13 special. Congress spends a weary day in conference on a wool schedule with a possible vote late next week. The president’s health shows improvement as he resumes desk duties and handles meetings with secretaries and senators.
The transcript covers tariff debates in Washington with focus on income tax exemptions for benevolent and fraternal societies and a lodge system. It notes a Senate schedule, statements by Mr West and Mr Veazey, and a request for information on gold coin receipts and foreign representations. Washington June 13 A meeting of New York and southern interests to induce investment in the south will be held at the Fifth Avenue hotel June 21. It follows recent southern conventions urging capital industrial plants and immigration to the region. A large list of New York merchants and financiers representing about $1 million in capital sign the call, including Patrick Walsh Colonel D B Dyer and R H Edmonds.
A broad invitation by R H Edmonds of Manufacturers' Record calls signees including Calhoun era names and dozens of prominent firms. The planned New York gathering seeks a general business view on advancing southern prosperity, with attendance open to farmers bankers merchants and property owners.
Tennessee Prohibition party members in Nashville held a mass convention and nearly endorsed the populist candidate for governor. The group backed prohibitionist platforms and urged action to align with Republicans on state issues. The executive committee will propose candidates likely to advance Prohibition goals and push constitutional changes plus federal currency reforms.
Nashville special reports the death of Dr W T Briggs a leading surgeon aged sixty five at Gorelock. His wife died a month ago, he leaves three sons all physicians and a daughter. He authored notable surgical works and helped found and preside over the American Medical Association. The State Will Win.
Dispatches from Ohio mining towns report strong opposition to the Columbus compromise. A. A. Adams campaigns against it while McBride is denounced in mass meetings and miners burn his effigy. Bridges burn and troops cost rail service as work resumes slowly at Coal Creek.
Birmingham news reports miners escalating their action against coal traffic. Letters signed One Thousand Biners threaten railroad engineers on the Kansas City Memphis and Birmingham line to avoid hauling scab coal to pressure a strike. A massive Alabama mass meeting follows failed joint talks. Centennial University of Tennessee commencements mark its 100th year.
Official reports say fifty men compelled a Louisville Evansville St Louis line freight train to stop at Fairfield Illinois on June 13 and demanded passage to Louisville. Blueford Wilson, solicitor for the road, responded to the incident.
In federal court Judge Allen asserts the mayor of Fairfield refused aid to rescue the train. The road, under receivers James H. Wilson and E. O. Hopking, prompts Brinton to act to rescue the train. Deputy Marshal Westfall travels to Fairfield ready to swear in deputies if needed.
Cripple Creek Colo June. No trouble at opening mines this week. Victor mine resumed operations and over twenty mines are listing ore. Twenty militiamen escorted twenty five prisoners to Colorado Springs via the Cheyenne Canon road and will return home.
About 200 Chattanooga black workers departed for the Birmingham coal district to fill roles left by striking miners. Harry Hargraves of Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railway Company pursued the laborers, with another agent en route to the mines. More departures were anticipated in the coming days.
Montgomery June 13 special. The Jeffersonians in Alabama's Second congressional district plan a vigorous race for the next representative. Candidates include W Reese of Montgomery and incumbent Jesse Stallings with A A Wyler also seeking renomination. The piece notes strong Democratic support for silver and hints at several other filings.
