State gains on rail line as Candler lauds Georgia ownership
Special Atlanta society meeting heard Mr. Candler review Georgia’s railroad history and the $785 million property. He noted the state earns $345,000 monthly under the fifty year lease to Nashville, Chattanooga and St Louis, with $3,000,000 in improvements planned and taxes paid by the lessee. He urged posterity to hold the state’s rights of way and property in Atlanta and Chattanooga, while defending Decatur against slanders.

Candler Defends Rail Route and Atlanta History
Georgia leader Henry Candler argues that Decatur opposed the railroad not to become Atlanta but to remain distinct as the mother of Atlanta. He notes lease history of Western and Atlantic, reports on state operation during war, and supports double tracking to Cartersville and a tunnel bill limiting rolling stock size. He cites J Houston Johnson’s valuation work and praises state leasing commission efforts.
