Building Trades Workmen Leave for Higher Wages
Nearly 200 building trades workers have left Atlanta for higher paying jobs. William Pollard, president of the Atlanta Building Trades, said 25 centers departed Wednesday night to work for the Foundation company in Jackson Mississippi, with railroad and Pullman fare reportedly paid by the company. A building trades council meeting at Taber temple noted strong labor demand in other cities and wage scales higher than Atlanta’s. Pollard urged higher local wages to retain workers, citing carpenters earning around 75 cents an hour locally versus 1 to 1.50 dollars elsewhere.
