London dateline reports Berlin warned the American colony to prepare to leave within forty eight hours as diplomatic relations with the United States may be broken. President Wilson prepared a note to Germany demanding compliance with humane maritime law, with extensive discussion in cabinet and confirmation that the United States will define its stance on neutral rights and torpedoing. The note references Lusitania and Gerhard von Bernstorff’s envoy, while other items cover the Gunfight indemnity offer and Cushing incident.
Atlanta moves to curb pistol sales as part of a broad tax ordinance revision. The tax committee unanimously removes pistols from the permitted list, barring sales in the city once the amended measure is passed. Brittain, long time educator in Atlanta and Fulton county, will be elected this morning as superintendent of Atlanta city schools to succeed W M Slaton. Board delays teacher appointments until Brittain can survey lists. twenty seven high school positions to be created. Names Lawton Evans and Ota Ashmore discussed as possible successors to state post.
Edwin Nix, an 82 year old Georgia Railway and Power Company electrician, was mortally wounded by a pistol discharge at Hartwell’s home in Mathis near Tallulah. The accidental shot, fired by H T Hartwell, occurred as they prepared to photograph Tallulah before Nix’s return to Atlanta. Nix named Hartwell as not responsible in a dying statement.
Montreal June 4. Canadian Pacific offices report a cablegram from Liverpool announcing the safe arrival of the White Star liner Adriatic, which left New York on the 2nd.
J Guinn president of the Atlanta board of education stated at the fifteenth High and English Commercial High Schools graduation that Atlanta high schools will eventually run from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. to help working students. Seventy four GCHS and four DMA graduates wore matching white costumes with pink roses. The event featured a strong chorus and several notable addresses.
In Albany on June 4 Charles Sey Whitman Jr. cried loudly as the governor spoke by telephone. About 150 people gathered at the mansion to talk with the party in residence, while the governor, in San Francisco, listened and coaxed the infant to utter a sound during the Panama-Pacific exposition era event.
Falmouth June 4 The British steamer Inkum from New York to London was torpedoed 480 o'clock this morning 43 miles southwest of Lixard Head The crew landed here by the Norwegian steamer Wendla The Inkum left New York May 3 for London She was 302 12 feet long and 3 0T4 tons net She was built at Glasgow 1901 and owned by Gulf Transport Line of Liverpool Two ships bunk off Scotland Kirkwall June 4 The crews of two liners declared to have been torpedoed were landed here Fifty three men belonged to Wilson Line steamer Iona bound Middlesbrough for Montreal Nine from Aberdeen fishing steamer Chrysophrasus The Iona sunk twenty four miles south of Fair Isle The Chrysophrasus sunk forty five miles off Stroneay In both cases sub was alleged to have shelled boats as they were launched The Danish steamer Cyrus torpedoed near Stavanger with crew landed The Larpland Swedish steamer sunk off Peterhead No submarine sighted The Salvador Danish timber schooner sunk off Wick Scotland The Demarara fired at a submarine off Lisbon The Demarara and Pervicone events noted.
Thirty three Ohio schoolchildren endured a long spelling contest in Columbus on June 4. They faced a rapid fire of difficult words, exhausting a 5000 word list prepared in advance. A committee will search dictionaries tonight for more tangled spellings as the agricultural commission directs the event. Seventy five boys and girls, each a county champion, entered the contest earlier in the day.
