Money for Forest Protection and Fire Prevention Funds
Destructive May fires highlight need for stronger forest protection measures across the nation. The article traces federal forest reserves begun eleven years earlier, noting initial $18,000 appropriation in 1897 for 29 reserves covering 26 million acres, later raised to $200,600 and then to $300,600 yet still deemed inadequate. It argues for larger funding to sustain summer patrols, retain experienced rangers, and meet expanding reserve needs as more lands are added and timber-cutting risks rise. Describes fires in Pennsylvania, Kentucky, New Jersey, Maryland, Indiana, New York, Connecticut, Minnesota, Colorado, Maine, and more as justification for budget increase.
