Railway Notes Then Memphis Pooling Case
A June 4 conference in Washington involved W W Finlay of Southern Railway and executives from six indicted railroads over pooling charges tied to Memphis cotton business. Seaboard Air Line and others with incidental interests joined discussions urging a speedy test case to avoid late fall delays. Officials met Interstate Commerce Commission, seeking to demonstrate good faith and resolve issues promptly. The commission will study the proposals. The day also covered Egan’s resignation as Ocean Steamship Company president and Major J F Hanson’s planned succession, viewed as a continuation of separate management of Central of Georgia and Ocean Steamship. Prior to the changes, Savannah traffic differed among railways, prompting the split. Egan’s role likely shifts to growing Central’s business, with continued influence sought in practical management.
