Surplus Claims Scrutinized by Senate Post Office Panel
John Corrigan Jr reports for the Washington edition that the Senate committee on post offices and post roads finds the postoffice department not self supporting under long standing methods. Senator Bourne chairs the panel, noting unbudgeted items, rental values, and rail transport costs distort the department’s financials. The committee believes current railroad compensation is inadequate yet cannot fully resolve the bill due to extensive legislation and debate.

Dillon Declines To Be Sacrificed
Columbus, Ohio, July 28. Inability to reconcile factions of the Republican party in this state was cited by Common Pleas Judge E S Dillon, Republican nominee for governor, as the reason he would decline the nomination. He said he would present withdrawal to the state central committee, which meets next Wednesday. Dillon, from Mackinac Island, said his written declination placed with Chairman Burton was not read to the convention and that his acceptance would mean a united ticket. He urged resignation as nominee. The central committee has favored Taft by 11 to 10 and may call the convention again to name a candidate. Potential successors mentioned include H M Dougherty and Warren G. Harding.
