Stephens Replies to Georgia Nomination for Governor

A letter from Hon Alexander H Stephens accepting the Democratic nomination for Georgia governor is dated July 25 1882 from Washington shows gratitude for the honor and outlines his Jeffersonian creed including equal justice for all, state rights, majority rule, civil over military, economy, and support for agriculture and liberty. Recommitment Debate Over Navy Bill Ended In Senate

The senate debated Cameron of Pennsylvania’s motion to recommit the naval appropriation bill with instructions to strike general legislation. A Williams amendment sought compensation for Charles H. Reed, but was referred to appropriations. The motion failed 29 to 34, and the senate adjourned after executive session. The house then handled Indian affairs and passed a right of way bill for the St. Louis and San Francisco railroad through Choctaw and Chickasaw lands. Williams reported on Nicholson correspondence. resolution tabled. House adjourned later.

Fire and Water Blaze in Alexandria Harbor

A massive fire erupted in Alexandria at two o clock this morning, seen from the harbor as the largest since past disasters. Officials suspect arson, with water flooding the area as efforts to contain the blaze continue.

A Daily News despatch from Alexandria reports Dervish Pasha claim that after the bombardment of Alexandria the English residents attacked inhabitants and pillaged the town. The Times notes the khediva ordered a commission of inquiry while General Alison agrees to investigate the reports.

Murder at Fort Leavenworth Shocks Army Guard

In Leavenworth Kansas on July 27 a guard named John ONeill shot Provost-Sergeant John Provost through the heart inside the fort. ONeill gave no explanation and refused to discuss the incident. In Iowa near McGregor on July 27 two freight trains collided four miles from town on the Milwaukee and St Paul line. Fireman William Mashber and two tramps died and several others were injured as engines locked and cars fell from a high trestle.
